About Us

Formed in response to dialogues with local professional actors who wanted a permanent home for theatre artists from the Tucson community, BATC’s mission is to create captivating experiences for its patrons, students, and the Tucson community through the highest artistic and technical quality productions and education programs. And true to its roots, BATC also strives to provide a theatre where performing artists, educators, and technicians can develop and present their skills.

Beowulf Alley's unique name was formed by combining two words that reflect opposite ideas. Beowulf (recognized as the oldest known Anglo-Saxon literary work possibly transcribed from oral performance) stands for the strong traditional and classical theatrical form, whereas Alley is evocative of a contemporary, urban, edgy approach to theatre. The merged name of Beowulf Alley therefore boldly reflects the company’s goal to present a broad range of works with the greatest excellence, integrity and innovation.

DSC_0200_edited-2Ruth Baron, our founder and board member, received the TPAC Lumie Art Supporter Award in 2009.  From the TPAC website:

Arts Supporter: To an individual or organization having  demonstrated outstanding leadership in advancing the arts  in the community through advocacy, promotion and/or  development of the arts.

Ruth Baron
Ruth Baron’s love of live theater and her generosity led her to the role of financial benefactor and founder of two local theaters: Live Theater Workshop (LTW) and Beowulf Alley Theater Company (BATC), each operating in its own space and each serving separate theater interests, based on their missions and programming. Ruth’s recognition of the value of the arts in children’s lives is evidenced by the strong, children’s programming at both LTW and BATC. A behind-the-scenes force, she is devoted to advancing the arts through her personal and financial support. Ruth Baron has been a gift to the arts, and an enormous impact on the community’s theater landscape.

crack1BATC rents its venue to acting and dance companies, musical groups, businesses, government agencies, organizations and individuals for performances, meetings and rehearsals and special events.
